Lan helps college theater group with play special effects. Othello variant? does illusion spell for costume: moor is white+russian/siberian? blue-grey-black (cat)? (What is finale of othello?) Lan could also be an extra - fight scene - good special effects (appears to be pieced with sword, etc) (not a flyer) could turn out to be very good/enjoy sword fighting.

Sten is graphic artist. Has created a very distinctive style that's become popular. (art deco? swirly?) Has done sign work for a few companies, starting to become in demand.

Is called in to discuss menu work, goes in to office of (fem) head of business. (may be bigger then restaurant - department store/etc?) Starting to give spiel, when door bursts open, and person is dragged in at knife point(?). "[God-mother], we got her for you ... oops" Godmother is (quietly) angry the henchman burst in a bad time; henchman is sorry/fearful. Vicitm drops to knees, begs, "I'll get you the money [godmother], I swear, I just need a little more time. (etc.)" Sten is frozen in panic. [Godmother] says something, "family has been patient, but honor is at stake, henchman, take him out to docks and show him how important honor is to a family, etc" Victim wails, is marched out. [Godmother] turns to Sten. "I really like your work. here's the agreed upon fee. I may have more for you to do in the future. It's nice to have such a talented artist in the family."

sten leaves money? and escapes outside, but doesn't go to authorities. (gray area, first slip) Things go down hill. (how?) every time he makes a gray decision, they have more control over him.

Sten gives family name as from an orphanage - background: name could be orphan, and also used by those from a bad family trying to start over. trying to earn honor to join nas Kan. Doesn't feel he has right to call on them, plus wants to show worthiness.

Sten goes in to hiding, doesn't want to get friends or sister involved. almost homeless - lives in low-rent-slum. (may need to accept mob job money for rent or go homeless) Mob may blacklist him, offer him another art job. Courier? Lookout? (nothing unforgivable - no killing)

Lan sees Sten, tries to confront him. Sten steps around corner into alley. Shoves Lan down into mud/gunk puddle, "Leave me alone you filthy panhandler! (etc)." Henchmen step into view from street. "Yo Cousin Sten, this rat bothering you?" "(handled it)" "[Godmother's] been lookin' for you. You ait avoidin' us are ya? (veiled threats)" "How could that be? /she never lets me out of her sight. I've been at xxx (glance at Lan)/ You know I'd never keep her waiting. Lead on cousin." head of with henchman 1, henchman 2 threatens Lan (stretch/claws/"Don't mess with your betters, rat") follow.

(How does Lan see Sten? Sten may have seen ad for play / heard of Lan's handiwork - snuck in the back (appreciates art / recognized/suspected Lan's name). Lan might catch glimpse and go after.)

Lan starts to realize Sten is in trouble. Starts keeping an eye out at xxx, sees Sten, tries to approach but realizes(?) sten wants him to follow discretely. Sten leads them somewhere (abandoned building?). "I'm so glad to see you Lan! (You've grown![?]) But you have to stay away from me! It's too dangerous." "Why? Sten, what's going on? What did you mean, "Cousin"?" Eventually Lan draws out the story. (Sten tells above / as flashback?) May take more meetings. Lan may go to Sten's place while invisible - get full story, pass on news that sis is worried, get gifts to take home. "Wow, Sten, this is really good. I didn't realize this was your work!" "Yeah, the [GodMother] likes it. The first person to put one of my designs on a tshirt and try to sell it got an unpleasant surprise." "But I've seen..." "Only mob approved copies." [weak grin].

Sten explains that he is trapped by the mob. He can't escape them in the city, and he thinks they'll track him down if he runs away. They keep asking him to do things, and he can't say no. He doesn't want to get anyone else involved.

(How do we get Sten out from under the thumb of a mob family? He has to be protected by an even more powerful family - the nas Kan!) (Kalindra shows down with [godmother] - Sten is ours. By our family honor, Sten has told us nothing about the mob, and never will. The artwork and (brand building) he has done for you should more than cover any debts he owes. We will not threaten your family; you will not threaten mine. Any interference with Sten or any other family member will be treated as an attack on the whole family. Just like your family, we will protect our own.)

(Relocate Sten to new city? Lan takes samples of new work? need to complete training and get name too - more story?)
