Nutsy was standing in a meadow of short grass. There were moths fluttering everywhere, beautifully iridescent in blues and grays under a harvest moon that dominated the skyline. Fireflies danced, crickets chirped, and the night was warm. He walked across the field, enjoying the beautiful night. After crossing the plain, he came upon Faehlyn standing at the edge of the world. Beyond this cliff was an infinite abyss, a bottomless nothing, terrifying in its vastness. Faehlyn however was excited. She was going to jump! Nutsy tried to tell her not to do it, that there was nothing on the other side, but she wouldn’t believe him. He implored her to stop. She knew she could make it. Nutsy grabbed her tail and tried to hold her back, begging her to reconsider. She leapt into the void, pulling him along with her. Nutsy screamed and Faehlyn giggled with delight as they plummeted into the infinite abyss.
Nutsy stepped out from behind a tall pine. The ground was covered with icy snow and the wind whistled through his whiskers. He fluffed his fur to trap his escaping warmth, but soon he was shivering. His hind paws stung from the cold and the sharp ice crystals in the snow. The tips of his ears and nose stung as well. The full moon stared down coldly from a starless sky. Around him, he could only see the rough trunks of more tall pines. There was no shelter from the biting wind. Suddenly, Serin appeared a few yards in from of him. The blue fox did not see him. Nutsy yelled. The fox did not respond. He yelled again. The fox turned to look at him. It was now a vixen with purple fur and eyes that glowed fiery red in the darkness. Nutsy turned on all fours and ran for his life. The vixen pursued. He dodged blindly through the trees. He could hear her paws beating the snow as she ran after him. Nutsy could feel her glowing eyes burning into the back of his head. He bolted up the side of a pine. She pursued! He leapt off a branch, and she ran after him with nothing but empty air beneath her paws. When he landed on a thick branch, he glanced over his shoulder. Sulfury breath, razor sharp teeth, and black maw engulfed him. Nutsy screamed again.
Nutsy was walking down the mossy path that led from his oak to the stream. A full moon was shining through the branches of the oaks, making pools of light on the path that danced and swayed.
Suddenly, from out of the bushes jumped three raccoons. The first one grabbed Nutsy with both paws. He held the squirrel up the air and laughed, Nutsy’s arms were pinned to his sides, and he could barely breathe let alone wiggle in the raccoon’s grasp.
"Ha ha ha! Well looky what we got here, boys! A lost squirrel!" declared the first.
"Heh heh heh! Yer in for it now, ya little runt," chortled the second.
"Whew-wee! What we gonna do with him Boss?" asked the third.
"I’ll tell ya what we’re gonna do. He’s gonna be a nice li’l squirrel and tell us where his winter stash is. An’ if’n he don’t, we’re gonna play us a li’l game of Squeeze the Squirrel," answered the first.
"Ooh! I like that game! ‘Speshally when their eyes pops out. Heh heh heh! You ain’t never seen nothing so funny in yer life!" chortled the second.
Nutsy finally found his voice and began to yell. "Help! Somebody, Heeelp!"
"What’s wrong, li’l squirrel? You hopin’ yer mommy will come and save you?" sneered the third.
Suddenly, Josh came running up the path and rammed the first raccoon with his shoulder. He hit the ground with a thud and lost his hold on Nutsy. The squirrel scrambled free and ran to his protector. The other two were frozen in place by the sudden turn of events. Nutsy looked up at his friend with relief and was about to thank him when Josh reached down and grabbed the squirrel by the neck.
"Ya fool!" Josh growled at the first. "Ya hold ‘em like this, see? That way they can’t make no noise."
Nutsy couldn’t breath! Josh was strangling him! He clawed futilely at the burly raccoon’s paw.
"Anyways," continued Josh, ignoring the squirrel’s struggles, "if ya really wanna find out where he hid his stash, ya gotta play What did the squirrely have fer lunch?" The big raccoon ran a sharp claw down Nutsy’s belly, letting the squirrel anticipate what was to come.
Nutsy tried to scream.
Nutsy was soaring high through the sky. The wind whistled in his ears and gently buffeted his face. He could see the whole forest laid out below him in shades of green and black. Above him was the glowing globe of the moon, shining with a silver radiance. Nutsy flew higher and higher, until he too began to glow. Soon he was the moon, bringing light to the night of the world below. Nutsy could see everything. He saw the mountains and the plains, the forests and the savannas, the oceans and the continents. He danced with the globe beside him, slowly turning. When his back was to the world he could shine no light down on the forests and the night was dark, but he would always continue turning until he was again facing his partner and could shine on the world again. Nutsy’s partner became a beautiful lady squirrel. She had a gray coat with green highlights where the starlight glinted off her fur. Her eyes were blue and enchanting. Together, they danced intricately through the sky as the stars swam around them. When she smiled at him, he wished the dance would continue forever.
