'Cause The Chicks Dig It

2004-03-08

"Hey, y'all! Watch this!"

Three surprised heads turned at the sound of my voice. Josh, Faehlyn, and Serin looked around but couldn't see anything but a huge barn in a large clearing in a pine forest.

"Up here!" I shouted.

They looked up to see me standing on the top ridge of the barn. Nutsy was sitting on my shoulder, waving at them.

Faeh gasped. "What are you doing all the way up there on the roof??"

"Where did you even find this barn?" shouted Serin.

"Not bad, eh?" I shouted back, looking at them down the double incline roof stretching out before me like a ski jump. I looked at Faeh and shouted, "I'll tell you why!" "Music, maestro!" I quipped and snapped my fingers. Nutsy and I sang the chorus with as much gusto as we could muster.

"Scars heal, glory fades. All that we're left with are the memories made. Pain hurts, but only for a minute. It's your life so go on and live it, 'cause the chicks dig it!!"

"Woo-yeah!" I crowed. "Speaking of which," and I snapped my fingers again. Josh was transported from the ground up to the roof top with us. Startled, he lost his footing and scrabbled to sprawl out on all fours across the ridge line.

"C'mon, buddy! You're the one with a girl down there. Ya gotta join us, man!"

"What the Hell?! Holy shit! What are we doing up here?"

"We're goin' flyin', man! 'Cause the chicks dig it!!"

"No way!" cried Josh, looking down the vertiginous drop. "What are you guys thinking?!"

"Come on, hop on! Or do we hafta leave you up here like a fraidy cat?" Nutsy and I started singing again. "Scars heal, glory fades!"

Josh shook his head, then walked the few steps over to us. I scooped him up before he could chicken out and held him in front of me. "All that we're left with are the memories made." Catching his breath, Josh joined us for the last lines, which we belted out to drown out our nervousness. "It's your life so go on and live it, 'cause the chicks dig it!!"

"Hey y'all! Watch this!" I shouted in my best redneck impression, then started down the slope of the roof. Faeh screamed and Josh frizzed (but I had him hanging by the armpits so he couldn't scratch me). All I had time to concentrate on was running and not losing my balance. In a flash we were at the edge of the roof, and I leaped, throwing Josh high into the air in front of me. I think everyone whooped, yelled, or screamed, depending on their wont. I flew through the air Superman style, but Josh took a more traditional parabolic route. When he came down into my outstretched arms, I caught him and the three of us went zooming over the tree tops. "Dude," I yelled to Nutsy, "I think you forgot the pixie dust!" He just laughed.

The three of us hooted and hollered as we swooped through the sky. After a few minutes, I returned us to the barn and our two friends waiting on the ground. I managed to land more or less gracefully, then sat down on the grass with my legs stretched in front of me and leaned back on my arms. "Whew!" I said, as I caught my breath.

Faeh ran up to the dazed raccoon and gave him a bone crushing hug.

"Damn, it does work!" I exclaimed, and we all laughed.
