Today we exercised, then went to Dietrick's (the local coffee shop) and had scones and mochas for breakfast. We went to Whole Earth Provision Company and tried on backpacks and boots, then went to REI and did the same. We both found boots we liked at REI, and we got trekking poles too. Unfortunately, the bakpack that I liked the best was at Whole Earth, and they were closed when we got back.
We came home and made Michelle's special caribbean pasta (with big chunks of feta cheese and olives and avacados - ok, sounds Greek, I know, but it's really good). We watched about half of Explorers before Michelle got sleepy and went to bed.
I ended up finishing Black Dogs. I meant to stop when I got to the end of the second part, but I clicked on the third part to see how it started, and ended up finishing it. It was definitely good. I liked the end, and in fact I like the bad guy (or I should say the bad guy was well done). It's not often you find a villan who is supremely competent. I also liked the resolution between Trent and Lyra. It takes maturity (bravery and self restraint) on the part of a writer to create an ending that is not happy, I think. I bet it's more of a challenge, too, to come up with a non-happy ending that is still satisfying to the reader. And Lyra really had a good character arc. I was impressed when I thought back on it. She went from a sheltered girl to a self-confident warrior, and there weren't really any jumps in her character. Definitely so good craftsmenship there.
