Journal: 2004-06-12

I slept in this morning. I love sleeping in, but I hate the fact that it eats up the day. Sometimes I think thirty hour days would be nice. :)

I had lunch with Michelle at LBJ today, which was fun. I brought her a Chipotle burrito bowl, and got to watch her read some X-rays. She explained what she was doing and it was pretty fun.

I tried to work in the back yard, but it was too hot and sunny so after a while I decided to wise up and work inside. I'm starting to make some progress on recovering my floor. I've got the easy stuff done, and now I'm starting to tackle the harder stuff - the "I kinda should do something with this but I'm not sure what" piles. I'm also doing lots of laundry - I'm sure you're fascinated to know that the next people to visit will have clean sheets. :)

With the sun going down, I went back outside and did more yardwork. I got a good five by three section re-sodded, but I had to stop. The mosquitoes were getting really bad, and Michelle said something about not moving some of the sod I had been planning to move, so it was a good time to stop. I think I've said it before, but I've found the best thing for mosquito bites is a hot shower. Aahhh! So much better. Afterwards, I went and got bubble tea and a few groceries.

Now it's time to tackle the paperwork again!

Let me tell you what's been going on in my life since we last met...
After high school, I attended Caltech for four years and graduated with a BS in Computer Science. I had a blast and could go on for pages about all the neat things I did there. Among other things, I did research in computer graphics, had one of Stephen Hawking's buddies as my physics TA, learned how to ski, and met Michelle, the wonderful woman who has since become my wife. After graduating, I moved to Seattle and worked for Microsoft. I had a great time. I was part of the team that shipped Windows 2000 and I contributed to Windows XP. After two years, I was recruited away from Microsoft by one of my Caltech professors to work at a financial company. I wrote option market-making software in White Plains (a suburb of New York City) for a year, then followed my professor to a hedge fund in Minneapolis called Deephaven Capital Management. There we founded the team that wrote their real-time autotrading system. I'm still working there as Lead Developer, and our team is now responsible for maintaining all the fund's technology needs, including risk management, operations, and accounting.

At the same time I started in Minneapolis, Michelle and I got married (June 30, 2001). My wife graduated from medical school at St. Louis University, and is currently doing her radiology residency at UT Houston. We own a townhouse in Houston, and I commute to Minneapolis during the week.

My wife and I love to travel. My wife and I love to travel. We have been to Tahiti, Europe (Rome, Florence, Venice, Bern, and Paris), Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto), the British Virgin Islands, and many places in the US including Hawaii and the Florida Keys. We love the Seattle area and hope to settle there eventually. I maintain a website (http://www.latenighthacking.com/) where you can find lots of photos from our trips and information about my programming projects and other hobbies. Michelle and I have no kids yet, but we hope to in a few years. In the mean time, we're enjoying just being with each other!
