MSP Notebook 2002
2002-09-23 : For the fun of it, I drew a picture of Haku after watching Spirited Away. I don't usually draw movie fan art, but I love this scene from the movie, and I wanted to see if I could get down on paper what I could see in my head. And I think it came out pretty well. This got me back into drawing in my notebook.

2002-11-25 : I decided it might be fun to try to create and draw another character. I decided it might be fun to try to do someone Asian, with perhaps martial arts skills. Perhaps with an elongated ferret or otter like body. I flipped through my animal encyclopedia, and found a creature that looked interesting - a linsang. As a bonus, the species name even sounds Asian (to my ears). :) Here is my attempt to create Master Linsang Qwon. First I copied the original picture from the book, as a reference. Next I tried to do a rough pose, and thirdly, I tried a detail of the head.
Rather than drawing him meditating, I though it would be more interesting to draw him practicing his martial arts technique. Forget the swords: this monk is so good, he can thwart would-be attackers with just his silk sash! I invented a pose one might use when practicing with a silk scarf, but I just couldn't get it down on paper. Aaargh! For the fun of it, here are my failed attempts. Also, at the bottom you can see my fight choreography attempt, showing how Qwon might deal with an attacking swordsman.

2002-12-10 : I was all excited after reading too many back issues of comic strips, and I decided I needed to try and draw something. I couldn't really think of what, so finally I decided to draw that: Nutsy not thinking about anything in particular.
2002-12-11 : Day two of this "I'm gonna draw something" kick. But this time I had an idea. Singing often puts me in high spirits. For some reason, when I got home I was trying to sing the "Well Tempered Clavier," which is hard because of the large jumps from high to low notes. It wasn't sounding too good until I swung it, then before I knew it I was improvising, and it sounded really cool. Then I knew exactly what I should draw! This is the result. I think I was able to get the mood across very well, and it still makes me laugh every time I look at it. Doo-wop a ditty, yeah!

2002-12-18 : OK, so I've come to grips with Gloria's new character designs. I like them now for what they are. I still think she's a great artist. Plus, the recent storyline of her web comic has been intriguing. We are starting to find out find out about Xe's shadowy past. I started wondering how this would affect him. Might he go back to the way he was? Might his hatred of his former employer kindle a need for revenge? What would this do to the Xe we know and love? I decided to try to draw the result, even though it is non-canon and bends Xe's character.
For the most part, I didn't have any troubles with the bodies (though Xe's hands still look funny). The key, however, was the faces. I got Ciaran's right off the bat, drawing purely from memory, which was cool. However, Xe was a travesty. So I gathered some reference material and tried again the next night. It was still hard, and is not perfect, but I think it's recognizable. Usually I draw by construction, drawing the fundamental shapes and then softening them. I screwed up Xe every time, even with reference images. I ended up just staring at the paper and slowly adding small bits that were not wrong, however disconnected they may be. It got me this far, anyway.
I think this was reasonably successful in that I managed to convey what I was attempting to convey and in that it looks pretty good. I wish the characters looked more like themselves and I still feel awkward about drawing Xe how he is not. But over all, pretty good.

2003-02-11 : This picture sure took a while to complete. After working on it for four days, I was quite excited when I finished it. Now I can't decide whether I'm proud of it or a bit disappointed. There are problems (long arms, trying to make Xe look like Xe) but there are also successes (managing to fit the characters into the odd shape and still convey emotion with their poses). It was hard to figure out how to show longing. Maybe they all just look sad, but I think it works. I think that the composition is successful in leading the viewer continually around in a circle and thus giving the viewer a sense that one is seeing a frozen instant of an unsteady balance. And I plunged ahead bravely through drawing all that black. :)

2003-03-05 : I drew this as an answer to one of Ursula's art challenges. The goal was to draw a picture without using any lines. Now, my choice of subject rather simple compared to most entries, but I wanted to explore a different question. When she said "no lines," most people used the left hand style, namely blocks of solid color. However, it seems to me that there are still lines anywhere there is a sharp delineation between one color and the next. To truly draw a picture without any lines, it would have to look like the one on the right, right?

2003-03-05 : It is not unusual for artists that like music to draw pictures of their characters playing instruments, or use song lyrics as the background of a picture. However, you don't find a lot of classical music given this treatment. I thought it would be cool to do an image inspired by Mozart's Requiem. My idea is to do a large panorama of images from the music, with my guys spaced at intervals in the foreground singing the choral parts. (An earlier idea [that still has merit] was to show Twap sawing furiously on a double bass with the images forming in the background out of the music she is producing.)
This is a collection of some practice sketches, trying to figure out what scenes the music evokes for me. Confutatis Maledictis!

2003-04-07 : Here is a little comicy bit, a scene from "Further Adventures". Every once in a while I get the urge to try doing a comic again, but I've yet to complete more than a few comics at a time. Still, I like what's here. The sketch of Josh in the last panel is one of the better ones I've done, which is only frustrating in that I was trying not to put too much into the panels so I could get more done.

2003-06-22 : This comicy bit was inspired by real life. Drawing quality was not the objective.

2003-07-14 : I don't remember what exactly inspired this one. I think it was listening to The Majestic soundtrack too much. :) That would be Begin The Beguin that Nutsy's singing. Criticisms: his head is far too big in proportion to his body. Feh.

2003-07-23 : I like Ursula's comic "Digger". Ursula has a very unique wit. :) Anyway, one of the things I do on my frequent walks is sing to myself, and I like trying to compose melodies. The problem is that these melodies are quite ephemeral. I can never remember them. I had also been thinking about how one could create an image that captures the qualities of a song (somewhat like the previous sketch). Then I decided to flip it around. Could I compose a song that captures the essence of an image? Now, fan art is quite common, but fan music is a bit less so! I thought I'd try to compose something that captured the feeling of "Digger", and even braver, try to write it down (my written music skills are pretty non-existent). I wouldn't say that this little melody does that great a job of capturing the feel of the comic, but I figured transcribing it would be enough challenge to start with. So here it is, in a rather odd format but fully recoverable.
2003-07-23 : To go with the above, here is a little sketch of Digger herself.

2003-10-07 : Sketches of the Shadows from Further Adventures: Shadows.
-
2003-10-21 : Some random sketches in my notebook - my foot, trying to capture Nutsy flying.
-
2004-04-02 : Sketches I did in an attempt to illustrate how one migh draw a picure suggesting the action of Digger throwing a pick.
-
2004-08-31 : Some random sketches in my notebook, trying to work out Moira writing in her diary.
2004-10-24 : Moira sitting on a bench, probably brushing her hair. I was working on trying to make her look feminine, and ended up with ... cheesecake?
2005-08-19 : This is Fritz. Short on stature, long on l33t skillz!
