Louis's pictures from 3-31-2001
This weekend, Michelle and her friends Jocele and Carolyn came to visit me in White Plains.
Since Jocele and Carolyn had never been to New York before, we spent the weekend exploring
New York City.
Michelle, Jocele, and Carolyn arrived on Friday night. I picked them up from Newark airport,
and everyone spent the night in my apartment in White Plains. Saturday, we rode the train in
from White Plains to New York City (Grand Central Station) at 11:00am. We grabbed a bagel
at Grand Central, then walked up Fifth Avenue to the Museum of Modern Art, where we met Jeremy
and Tam at noon. I particularly liked the "workspheres" exibit, which was mostly an exhibit containing
all sorts of new-age office equipment. They also had a neat photography exhibit.
From there, we left Jeremy and Tam and set out to explore the city and hopefully catch a show.
First, we went to Rockafeller Plaza.

Rockafeller Plaza is always a great place to get a group picture. Here (left to right)
are Michelle, Carolyn, and Jocele. |

Here is another group picture, which also shows shows some of the national flags
surrounding the plaza for a bit more atmosphere. |

I always thought this was a really neat set of fountains. It looks to me like they are statues
of merpeople having a race, riding on different sea creatuers, like a shark and a dolphin. Plus,
tulips have just been planted in the flower beds so the fountains look really nice.
However, it's just not
possible to take a picture of this place without tourists in it! :) |

Seeing the photography exhibit at MoMA reminded me how much fun photography can be.
So, here's an attempt at an artistic picture: green leaves and pink tulips, in fresh soil. |

Not as many ice skaters as usual this time. We must be aproaching the end of ice skating
season. It is spring, after all, and it hasn't snowed for a week! The Prometheus scuplture is
still being renovated, as you can see. |

Here's the GE building again. I figured a picture of it in the day time would contrast well
with my earlier night time picture. |

From Rockafeller, we headed to Times Square. Here are Michelle, Jocele, and Carlyn, taking in
the sights. We had no luck getting tickets for our show at T.K.T.S., becuase the booth didn't open
for another half hour and the line was already miles long. |

I just had to take another picture showing how many taxis there are in NYC. |
We took the subway down to the Orpheus Theater in East Village to see if we could
get tickets to see Stomp. No luck with that, unfortunately, but we did get entertained by
all the people with purple hair and extensive body piercings. We also found some excellent
looking restaurants, including a tapas bar called La Paella (on East 9th between 2nd
and 3rd Ave).

Next we rode the subway down to the southern tip of Manhattan Island. Here are Carolyn,
Jocele, and Michelle, waiting in the subway station. Did you this is the first time Jocele
has ridden a subway? Stand clear of the closing doors, Jocele! (Ouch!) |

We rode the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island and back because it has such a
good view and because it's free! Here are Carolyn and Michelle looking at the Manhatten
coastline. In the background (on the right) are the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. (panorama) |

More art photography! This is the ferry pier at Staten Island. Lines in contrasting
directions, shadows, and liquid green distortion. |

While waiting for the ferry to begin the return trip, we watched this huge orange ship
pass by. We were not sure what type of cargo it was transporting, since, while it seems
to have some boxes on top, it does not look like a container ship. |

My guess from the huge ramp on the back of the ship is that it must be carrying cars. Since this
is the East Coast, I guess those would be European imports instead of Japanese imports
like in Seattle. :) |

After the ferry ride, we went to see the World Trade Center. We decided not to go
up to the top. Instead we just looked at it from the outside, looking straight up over
a hundred stories. |

This is a fun picture of Carolyn, Michelle, and Jocele looking at the World
Trade Center. |
From the World Trade Center, we went back to La Paella and had tapas
(basically, Spanish appetizers) for dinner. It was really
good. The restaurant also had a very neat decor, with a Spanish flavor and dried roses hanging from the ceiling.
The food was so good, I forgot to take a picture! Oh, well. After that, we went back to Times Square to
see it at night. You have to see it at night to get the full effect, after all!

Look, the cup-o-noodles is steaming! Hmm. Can you say "foreshortened"? The blue spots are
either aliens or lens flare; I'm not sure which. |

on a video screen. |

Here they are! Jocele, Michelle, and Carolyn in Times Square. |
In Times Square, we had Häagen-Dazs ice cream for dessert, and then caught the traing back
home from Grand Central to White Plains. No one had any problems falling asleep that evening!
