Louis's Photos from 8-12-00

This week I decided to drive north and do some random exploring. I ended up in the Catskills. I found this short little hike (1.2 miles) up to the top of a mountain, and I thought it would be the perfect chance to stretch my legs, see the forest, and get a good view. The place was called Devil's Tombstone campground and trailhead. Boy, the lady at the ranger station was right when she said the trail was mostly straight uphill!

Here I am at the trailhead. There is a little lake, and you can see the road continuing along the canyon. The trail actually goes in both directions from here. From here I went right, across the road.
Looking the opposite direction from the last picture, here the trail crossed the stream with a little bridge. (I'm standing on the dam at the end of the lake.)
A pretty mushroom I found along the trail. I think I like to take pictues of mushrooms because they are visually interesting and they will sit there as long as you want while you try to compose the picture. :)
Here is a picture looking backward along the trail, near the top. It's actually flat here, and there's a little stream that you can't see running behind the big flat boulder in the middle of the path.
I finally made it to the top! Unfortunately, the top of the mountain was in a cloud so I could barely see anything. Oh well, it was a fun hike anyway.
The top of the trail is a large rock outcropping that stick out above the trees. This is looking back down the trail, and is actually directly underneath the previous panorama. That first drop is about eight feet, and below that is really steep too! Pretty impressive trail, in my opinion. :)
The trail continued on, of course. The top of the mountain was flat and kind of eerie due to all the mist (since it was in the clouds). It reminded me of an old, unkempt orchard, since there was so much open space underneath the trees. It was pretty cool.
At the top there were these small little plants with three or four bright blue berries. I wonder what they are?
There were some German hikers there too, so I got them to take a picture of me at the top, even though there wasn't much to see. Gotta have proof, after all.
Near the top of the trail, it leveled out for a while and got really muddy. Thankfully, someone had put huge stepping stones along the trail so it was easy to get by. On the way down, I saw something dive into the water and under the stepping stone. I stopped to investigate and discovered that a bunch of frogs were living there! Here is a blurry picture of one peeking out from underneath one of the stepping stones.
This is the best view I was able to get of the countryside. I took this picture through one of the few opeenings in the trees along the trail.
On the way down I slipped when I stepped on a wet log (what was I thinking??) and scraped up my arm from wrist to elbow. It wasn't very serious at all, but it sure looks impressive. :)
