Louis's Photos from 7-7-00

After the movers came and took all my stuff out of my apartment, and Michelle flew home to St. Louis, I went with Michael to hear his group, Opus 7, sing at St. Mark's Cathedral. I was also assistant camera person, making sure I got pictures of the special guest, Alice Parker.

Here is a picture of the interior of the church, as the Opus 7 members arrive and get ready to warm up.
Here is Opus 7 warming up withe their director Loren Pontén.
This is the big pipe organ at the back of the church. I've heard it in other concerts, and it's pretty impressive, especially on the low notes. :)
Now the concert is beginning. This is Alice Parker, "an American choral legend." Apparently she has been writing and arranging American choral music for a long time and has a big impact on American choral music. You learn something new every day. :)
What was interesting was that she led us in singing the songs that were printed in the program. She showed us different ways to improvise on the melody printed on the page, and by the end we were doing some really neat free-form group singing. It sounded great, though nothing like a "normal" choral performance.
Here is Opus 7 about to sing some more American folk songs.
Here is a panorama I stitched together to produce a closup of the entire group signing.
Alice led Opus 7 in signing some of her arrangements as well.
This is a picture of the whole audience signing under Alice's direction. It was neat becasue almost everybody was involved.
Here is Alice conducting the last song, where we applied everything that she showed us. Thank you Alice, for teaching me something new!
