This Sunday, Michelle and I decided to go for a drive. We weren't exactly sure where we were going to go, but we grabbed some French bread and cheese from Trader Joe's and decided to strike out for Sol Duc Falls in Olympic National Park. It was a good plan, as we had a great time!
After grabbing food, we boarded the ferry. Here, we've just parked on the ferry and Michelle is trying to figure out how far it is to Sol Duc Falls |
This is an artsy picture of the cars on the ferry. I'm very impressed how it came out. This picture is practically black and white, and it was taken in full color! |
The drive across the top of the Olympic peninsula was very pretty. Here we are driving by Crescent Lake. As you can see, the weather was a little questionable but very scenic. It was sprinking off and on the whole time. |
We decided to check out the campground at Sol Duc before we actually got to the trailhead. Looks like a beautiful campground, but I don't know about this weather. :) Apparently, the road to Sol Duc was somewhat uphill, because by this picture, it was snowing off and on! |
We arrived at the trailhead, and the weather hadn't cleared up, but we decided it could be quite a while until we were here again, so we decided to go for it. The trail was well maintained and very pretty. Here is Michelle on the trail to Sol Duc falls. As you can see, it cleared up on the way, because there's sunlight in this picture. |
Here is Michelle in front of one of the little cascades on the way. |
We decided that if the big one is Sol Duc, which was sometimes spelled Soleduck, this must be soleduckling. :) |
Everything was so green. I'm a sucker for waterfalls. |
Here is the real Sol Duc falls. It's pretty unique, because the water falls "sideways" into this big ravine in the rock. |
Here is Michelle standing at the viewpoint, with the bridge crossing the raving in the background. |
A close up of the top of the falls, showing the water polished and moss covered rocks. The little shrub in the foreground which is just starting to leaf out looks good against the water. |
This is a good view of the waterfall, looking back the other direction from the first picture, along the ravine and towards the bridge |
I like this picture, but for the life of me, I can't remember what Michelle was looking at. I think she was looking at the flock of penguins flying around in the trees. |
Michelle took this picture for me. I tried to get a picture of me with the falls, but it just didn't work, so I made this a picture of just me instead. Hello! |
While we were hiking back, the we were hit by a snow flurry. The flash made this picture really dark, but it sure shows the snow! As you can see, it was falling in big clumps. |
We made it back to the car and headed for home. Here we've gotten to a clearing in the trees at the entrance station. Michelle took this picture for me trying to show how close we were to the snowline. |
Another picture of of Crescent Lake. Since we got started a little late, we ate our bread and cheese as a kind of early dinner at a pull-off overlooking the lake. |
One advantage of a rainy day is that you can get some pretty spectacular rainbows, like this double rainbow we saw on the Hood Canal Bridge on the way home. In fact, we could actually see the full 180° of the inner rainbow. It was really pretty. |
We took the ferry home from Bremerton to Downtown Seattle. We were parked right in the front of the ferry, and we had an awesome view of the Seattle skyline lit up in the night. I tried many times to take a good picture, but it was impossible to capture. This picture gives an idea what it looked like from a distance - bright colorful lights, with a glow in the sky above it - but it was prettier than this picture suggests. |
Most of the pictures came out looking like this. :) |
This picture, though a bit blurry, does show the Space Needle. |
This picture came out really well. I'm not sure how I did it - I may have set the camera on the car. Again, reality was better, but this is pretty good. |
