Louis's Photos from 6-20-99

This weekend, my sister Kim came down to visit. Yay! So, on Sunday, Michelle, Kim, and I went on a trip to Mt. St. Helens and Multnomah Falls in the Colombia River Gorge.

Here is a picture of Michelle and I in front of Mt. St. Helens.

Here is Mt. St. Helens. The mountain itself isn't too impressive to look at, but the evidence of the erruption is rather incredible. You can see where the whole side of the mountain slid away and flowed down the valley. The blast left complete desolation and a few shattered tree trunks here on the ridge. The lava dome growing in the crater shows that the mountain is certainly not dead. The clouds immediately above the mountain are actually steam.
This is a picture looking east along Johnston Ridge from the visitor center. This might look like a picture of nothing much, but when you realize that just a small part of the huge landslide washed over this ridge and down the canyon on the left side of the picture, leaving huge marks where parts of the canyon walls were scoured bare, it is pretty impressive. There are even hummocks left on the ridge. Hummocks are like chunks of dirt left over from the landslide, only they are the size of small hills.
Here is an annotated version of the previous picture so you can identify all the features I mentioned above. The two-lane road down in the canyon might help you get a sense of the scale of the picture and the size of the slide. I guess I just find demonstrations of raw power really impressive. :)

This is a good picture of the upper falls, the bridge, the lower falls, and the lower view point.
Here I am in front of the falls.
Here I am with a beautiful woman on each arm. Am I lucky or what?
The lower falls and the bridge.

This picture shows all the moss and ferns on the rocks at the bottom of the upper falls.
Here we are looking straight down a water fall. Don't get dizzy!
We hiked a little ways along the trail the went from the lower to the upper falls. Here is the best view we got of the Colombia River. This river is huge.
