Louis's Photos from 6-11-99

This weekend, Michelle and I went on a trip around Olympic National Park. We left my appartment about 2pm and drove south, then up the Hood canal to Lake Cushman at the south-easter corner of the park.

We are camping at Staircase Campground in the national park. It is a really nice site near the river. We had steamboats (hobo stew) for dinner, and Michelle is waiting for me to hurry up and take this picture so we can have dessert.
Here I am, standing next to my new tent.

The road up the east side of the park was closed, so the next day we drove across the south end and up the west side. We stopped at Lake Quinalt for lunch, then continued up the west side, stopping at a couple of beaches along the coast.

Here is Michelle sitting on the huge pile of driftwood at Beach 1. The driftwood is pretty much continuous along the coast here.
The last beach we stopped at was Ruby Beach. This picture was taken at an overlook on the trail down to the beach. The seastacks and rugged caostline make this beach really pretty.
Here is picture of Michelle sitting on a big log at Ruby Beach.
Here I am, standing in front of the seastacks.
Here is Michelle sitting on her log, this time looking the other direction so we can see the ocean and the rocks.

From Ruby Beach, we headed inland and camped Saturday night in the Hoh Rainforest.

Michelle and I went hiking in the Hall of Mosses trail and the Spruce Grove trail. We stopped for a moment and I took this picture of Michelle resting against a fallen tree. Every surface around here has things growing on it, and a fallen log is a good place for new plants to get a foothold.
Michelle took a picture of me here too. Her picture of me is much better.
Michelle stopps to look at the plants growin on another tree stump. What is she looking at with such great interest?
Michelle is looking these pretty pink flowers, of course!
Here is a picture of a stream running through the dense greenery of the rainforest. The stream is amazingly clear, although in this picture all you can see are the reflections.
Here we are at out campsite, waiting for dinner to cook.
Michelle checks on dinner. She is making shishkabobs and corn-on-the-cob. Michelle is a great camp cook!
Here is close up of a slimy rainforest denizen. This banana slug isn't very yellow, is it?
This is the view from our picnic table. What a pretty camp site! I love going to the rainforest.

Sunday morning we broke camp and headed across the northern edge of the park, stopping off at Hurricane Ridge.

Here is a panoramic view of the Olympic Mountains taken from Hurricane ridge. The West Peak of Mt. Olympus is visible in the right-most photo. To find it, find the grey landslide on the side of the mountains, go straight up to the notch in the skyline, go right to the next notch, and backtrack left two teeny black peaks. That's the West Peak, which is the highest point in the park. There is a zoomed in picture below. (size: 200k, ~=3 regular pictures)
This is a picture of Michelle and I on Hurricane ridge. There were a lot of people playing in the snow bank in the right side of this picture, even some snowboarders!
We climbed the ridge and I took this picture looking northward. Here we can see the Straight of Juan de Fuca separating the Olympic Peninsula from Vancouver Island and the San Juan Islands..
Here is a close up view of the peaks of Mt. Olympus. The red arrow points out the West Peak, which is the highest in the park. The white stuff in the left notch above the landslide is the Hoh glacier. Mt. Olympus is about seven miles from the ridge in front of it, which is about eight miles from where I am standing. That's why they look about the same height.
Here are Michelle and I at an overlook on the way down from Hurricane Ridge. The mountains are so pretty, we just had to get another picture.
We decided to ride the ferry back. Here is a picture of Seattle looking tiny in front of the massive presense of Mt. Rainer, taken as we were crossing the sound. We could even see the Space Needle, although it doesn't show up in this picture.
Here I am standing next to Suby as we ride the ferry back to Seattle.
