Louis's Photos from 5-1-99

Saturday, we decided to go on a hike. I looked in my book on hikes in Washington and found "Hike 54: Boulder River To Boulder Ford Camp". I grabbed some GORP and bagels, and went to Lance's house. We packed Lance, Kelli, Kyle, Kelli's brother Darrel, and I into Lance's Passat and headed north to the trail. Along the way we passed an overturned semi that was blocking all southbound lanes of the freeway. Talk about bad traffic! The weather was nice and sunny when we left Seattle, but it alternated between rainy and overcast as we drove to the trailhead. It was barely sprinkling at the trailhead, and most of us were not prepared for bad weather (for example, some were wearing shorts and a t-shirt), but we decided to hike a little ways anyway. I loaned Kyle my sweatshirt and we set off. The trail was really pretty, and we saw two great waterfalls coming down the shear walls of the canyon before we decided to turn back.

On the way home, they still had not cleared the semi and traffic was at a stand still for miles back, so we got off the freeway and took back roads home. That was fun too.

Lance took this picture of the countryside we were driving through on the way to the trailhead. Here we had a patch of blue sky, but you can tell the weather wasn't exactly sunny.
A group picture of the hikers on the trail. Left to right, Lance, Kyle, Kelli, and Darrel.
Here is our troop, hiking through the forest. I think catching Kelli's reflection in the puddle was a nice touch.
We could hear the river much of the time, but the trees would only occasionally open up enough for us to see the Boulder River. Interestingly enough, this picture came out better with the flash on. Usually it's the other way around.
Kelli wanted to get a picture of her in front of this neat tree stump we found.
Kyle wants in on the action too.
More hiking through the forest. I think the moss covered trees are just beautiful.
Yes, that white stuff is snow on the ground. Darrel, maybe the reason your fingers are so could is because you keep throwing snowballs. :)
Another forest picture. This one gives a great sense of scale.
Lance took this picture looking down the trail because he wanted to show how verdant everything was. No, that's not bright sunlight on the trail, that's snow.
Here I am, bringing up the rear. I was having a good time enjoying the scenery.
Boulder River shows itself again. It seems to have quite a lot of water.
One of the prettier rivulets running down the hilside and across the trail.
We came to the first waterfall. As I was walking behind everybody, I saw a good picture when Lance and Kelli first saw the waterfal and pointed it out to each other. I tried to get them to do it again so I could take the picture, but they ended up tickling each other instead. Oh well, close enough. It's still a good picture. :)
A tall waterfall framed by tall trees.
It took Lance two pictures to completely photograph the waterfall. I composited it together to create this image.
We continued hiking an reached a second waterfall that was even prettier than the first.
A close up of part of the waterfall, showing how covered with green everything was.
The bottom half of the waterfall.
The top half of the waterfall. This water fall is actually pretty big, since that black notch at the top of the falls is a log sticking out sideways over the water.
Here I am, standing in front of the falls. We decided that we had better turn around here and head back since we weren't really prepared for a hike in this weather.
Kyle reminds me a lot of Calvin. We found a big hollow spot at the base of a tree, so we wanted to get a picture of Kyle coming out of the hole. My camera takes a couple seconds to focus and do whatever before it actually takes a picture. Kyle couldn't seem to sit still more that about two seconds, but camera always took the picture after about three! It took about three blury pictures of Kyle leaving the picture before we got this one. :)
