As I drive around town, I always keep an eye out for trails and parks. There are a surprisingly large number in the area. They are often pretty but well hidden. I had noticed a trail head while driving along West Lake Samamish Parkway, and resolved to check it out. I finally had an opportunity this Saturday. There is barely any room to pull off there, and not much more than a large sign and a trail heading off into the trees.
The sign at the trail head had some pretty neat information though. One of the things they had was an arial photograph of the region, with the trail drawn in. |
They also had a map of the surrounding parks and trails. The interesting thing is that I had hiked all the way to the Lake Hills Greenbelt (left of Phantom Lake) coming from the east from my old apartment. |
The trail started by going straight up the side of a steep hill. It's pretty impressive. |
There were many of these solitary white flowers in bloom. I'm not sure what they are. Possibly a trillium? |
After a steep climb to the top of the first hill, the trail turns south and follows the ridge line. Here we are in one of the occasional small canyons. The sunlight is filtering through the trees to make things really pretty. |
At this point, the trail goes right by somebody's property line. They've cut down all the trees, which is too bad, but you can see Lake Samamish pretty well. |
The trail eventually reaches this little bridge over the falls at the top of hidden canyon. The trail then collows the canyon back down to W. Lake Samamish Parkway. |
They built a nice overlook about halfway down the length of canyon. Here is a picture from the overlook looking back up the canyon. |
The street at the bottom of the canyon is actually higher than the water level, so the creek forms a nice reflecting pond. |
The pond of course has a drain, but I think this drain is really mysterious looking. It looks to me like if you hop down this rabbit hole there's no telling where you'll end up! |
